The Morrison Story 1948–2019

£30.00

This is a fascinating story well told, and it is one that will appeal not only to those who have associations with the company, but also to business historians and anyone interested in how a successful business can be built from nothing.

Description

The story of Morrison Construction begins in Nazi-occupied Poland, where a young man from the Scottish Highlands found himself in a prisoner of war camp. Five years of captivity gave Tain-born Alex Morrison ample time to think, and to develop his characteristic resourcefulness and determination.

After his release, he married and started his own business, often employing ex-comrades in the early days. This small outfit took on all the work it could, starting with joinery and other small jobs. The breakthrough came with the contract for the Invergordon Distillery warehouses, through which the company expanded. Growth continued with the addition of a profitable quarry division which, with the demands of the oil industry, became a valuable asset, and led to takeover by Consolidated African Selection Trust in 1973.

In many ways, this was just the beginning, as the family continued to have considerable influence. Alex remained an important figure, while both his sons, Fraser and Gordon, took leadership roles. As the Highland economy boomed with the offshore industry, so did Alex’s business, which became a major force in civil engineering and property development, as well as broadly based construction.

The company was returned to family ownership in 1989, and a focus on quality and partnership saw considerable returns and contracts around the world. In 1995, the business was successfully floated on the London Stock Exchange. The company continues to flourish under M Group Services and Galliford Try.

• A genuinely readable account of a superb business built on principles of hard work and high quality.
• Lavishly illustrated with many original drawings, paintings and photos
• An inspirational tale of vision, determination and family values
